Trick or treat was in full effect this weekend. The kids and costumes were entertaining and the streets were filled with revelers and the usual suspects: MP football costumes, little princesses and a lot of Jasons from Friday the thirteenth. Probably the most creative costume was a Chinese to go carton complete with noodles! We ran out of candy this year so we won’t make that mistake next year. I think the schools should go back to the policy of no school the next day, much to the dismay of students going home “early” to get ready for a busy week.

The parties were going at Kim and Steve Dicicco’s home and Michael and Trish Shield’s place is always a great venue for the haunted house. The neighborhood has become a destination for many Moorpark residents and it is great to see the kids having fun and feeling safe. My son Anthony enjoys being the ghost and scaring the unsuspecting souls as they walk by. All in the work of entertainment and being a resident of Moorpark.

Until then see you on Tierra Rejada and LA Avenue with a stop on High street and the sight of Pepper Trees lined along the road.

Remember Bill Murray in Groundhog Day? Seems like I had that same feeling this past weekend in MP.

So I had some spar time running around the city getting things ready for Halloween. Halloween is very big in my neighborhood. Block parties, haunted houses and hundreds of tricks and treats to be enjoyed by the kids big and small. I spent most of my weekend working with my son getting the goons and ghools ready for just the right trick or treat on that poor unsuspecting child….

Between stops at stores in MP, we stopped in at Carli’s Bistro. My son had the Turkey Wrap and I enjoyed a light and refreshing French style salad. . Who said the French can only make wine. It was great hanging out with my son and enjoying the sights on High Street. Interesting people watching during a Saturday afternoon…

Sunday started out great with a plane ride (courtesy of Scott Sevcik) to Big Bear for breakfast at the local country restaurant Thelma’s. What a treat!

Back to Carli’s for dinner—my son enjoyed it so much on Saturday he insisted we take our family friend to Carli’s again..hence Groundhog Day metaphor. This time we enjoyed the Trip Tip Burrito and yes the Frenchman can make a burrito.

Give Carli’s a visit but beware you may experience Groundhog day sooner than you think. Have a great week and…

Until then see you on Tierra Rejada and LA Avenue with a stop on High street and the sight of Pepper Trees lined along the road.

HISTORY:

The Name:

The origin of the name “Moorpark” is not known, but several sources have been suggested. However, most sources agree that its origin was Admiral Lord Anson’s estate Moor Park in Hertfordshire where he introduced the apricot in 1688.[6][7][8] It is mainly believed that the city of Moorpark is named after the Moorpark Apricot, which used to grow in the area. This was confirmed by Robert Poindexter, the founder of Moorpark, in 1927.

Motto: “Life Can be this good.”

The valley where Moorpark is located was originally inhabited by the Chumash. The area was part of the large Rancho Simi land grant given in 1795 to the Pico brothers (Javier, Patricio, and Miguel) By Governor Diego de Borica of Alta California.

Robert W. Poindexter, the secretary of the Simi Land Company, received the land that made up the original townsite of Moorpark when the association was disbanded in 1887. Moorpark was founded in 1900 when the application for a post office was submitted. The application lists that there was already a railroad depot in the town.[9] The town grew after the 1904 completion of a 7,369-foot (2,246 m) tunnel through the Santa Susana Mountains, which allowed the Southern Pacific Railroad to establish a depot there, a depot which lasted until 1965.

Moorpark College opened on September 11, 1967. Moorpark College is one of the few colleges that features an Exotic Animal Training and Management Program.

Twenty years later, Moorpark was incorporated as a city on July 1, 1983.

In February 2005, a Siberian Tiger named Tuffy that escaped from a local residence was shot and killed in one of Moorpark’s parks. This created a great deal of uproar, because the Animal Control officers used a gun instead of a tranquilizer to kill the tiger, primarily because the tiger could not be shot from the proper angle for a tranquilizer to prove effective. Candlelight vigils were held for the late Tuffy. The couple that owned the tiger had moved from a licensed facility in Temecula, California to an unlicensed facility in the Moorpark area of Ventura County. They lost their U.S. Department of Agriculture exhibitor license because they failed to notify the department of the move within 10 days. The wife pleaded guilty to a federal misdemeanor count of failing to maintain records of exotic felines. The husband pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, making false statements and failing to maintain proper records.[10] Each was sentenced to home detention, three years probation, and fined $900.[11]

Just a month later, in March 2005, the fairly complete remains (about 75%) of an unusually old mammoth, possibly the rare Southern mammoth (Mammuthus meridionalis), were discovered in the foothills of Moorpark at the site of a housing development.[12]

Egg City

In 1961, Julius Goldman founded Egg City, which was a massive chicken farm north of Moorpark, with many chicken coops spread over acres of concrete with millions of chickens in them. The main building had a giant chicken statue on the top of it. Local residents were somewhat irked by the farm, when the smell of it wafted to Moorpark on windy days. The business suffered a setback in 1972, when more than 3 million chickens were slaughtered because of the threat of Newcastle disease. The farm finally closed in 1996. In early December 2006, a wildfire destroyed the dilapidated remains of Egg City.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7433097/

updated 4/8/2005 3:03:52 PM ET 2005-04-08T19:03:52

MOORPARK, Calif. — The remarkably well-preserved remnants of an estimated half-million-year-old mammoth —including both tusks — were discovered at a new housing development in Southern California.

An onsite paleontologist found the remains, which include 50 percent to 70 percent of the Ice Age creature, as crews cleared away hillsides to prepare for building, Mayor Pro Tem Clint Harper said.

Paleontologist Mark Roeder estimated the mammoth was about 12 feet tall, Harper said. Roeder believed it was not a pygmy or imperial mammoth, but he had not yet determined its exact type, Harper said.

“It’s considered a very significant find, and it’s a very complete fossil. It’s unusual because it was found all the way down near the bedrock,” Harper said. “We asked if carbon dating could be used and they said no way, it’s too old.”

Harper said the first bones were spotted several days ago and a special crew was called in after Roeder found more remnants, including the 6- and 7-foot-long tusks.

“They’ve been encased in plaster and burlap and removed from the site,” Harper said.

Moorpark in Ventura County is about 30 miles west-northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

“The Moorpark mammoth, that’s what we’ll call it,” Harper said.

Other Ice Age creatures have been found in recent years around Southern California, including a mastodon in Simi Valley, a mammoth in Oceanside and a pygmy mammoth on the Channel Islands.

b. CIVIL WAR REENACTMENT

The 10th Annual and the largest Civil War battle reenactment west of the Mississippi returns to Moorpark November 13th and 14th 2010. This year’s event will reenact five different battles. The theme is “The Gallant Custer!” While the battles are spectacular, you can make a real day of it by visiting the Union and Confederate encampments, taking pictures, visiting the sutler tents (the general stores of the Civil War) learning how to dance like they did in the day, and generally observing life as it was during the Civil War. There is a huge food court with moderate prices so you can enjoy lunch or snacks with lots of picnic tables to enjoy your fare and wait for the next battle.

Good Sunday fellow MP bloggers.! Sorry for my delayed blog update since Oct 4th. I was in Miami and met a girl name Paula..No not a latin female named “Paula” but Hurricane Paula! She was more of a tease than the real thing, although the Doral Resort in South Beach lost power. Have you ever tried to get down a stairwell in the dark?—thank goodness for cell phones and backlight.

Since my last update, Evita! is the talk of performing artists in Ventura County. The show opened on Friday 10/8 at the High Street Arts Center. Opening nite was nearly sold out and the audience was taken back to the 1940’s when Eva Peron was the Queen of the Argentine people. The show had its typical opening nite issues: a few missed cues and lights but it received rave reviews by local press:

http://www.vcstar.com/news/2010/oct/15/moorpark-team-does-tough-evita/

More details and tickets to Evita and the upcoming return of High Street Broadcast are available at www.highstreetartscenter.com

You must also go see “Footloose” at the Camarillo Community Theater! The cast of Footloose is very talented and it makes me even want to get up and dance (that is a belly laugh in my family). All the actors are energetic and talented, but clearly the lead, Adam Razor as “Ren” highlights the show.

Adam is a local Moorpark talent and has done more shows in the area in the last five years that can be listed in this blog. Adam’s ability to capture the audience and bring you back to the sleepy town which outlawed dance, make for a good time. The show runs from 10/15 to 11/21 and is located in at the Camarillo Airport Theater off of Las Posas Road in Camarillo. (Former US Air Force Base)

www.camarillotheater.org

Until then see you on Tierra Rejada and LA Avenue with a stop on High street and the sight of Pepper Trees lined along the road.

Howdy their bloggers! Yes my drawl is still with me especially after this years’ parade. I hope things have been going well for y’all since my last post on 9/19. I’m playing some catch up right quick, but wanted to share with you some of the details of the annual city parade: Moorpark Country Days. This year’s event, sponsored by the Moorpark Chamber of Commerce and Moorpark Rotary was a great time. It was enjoyable to see old neighbors get reacquainted; anxious mom’s walk next to their soccer kids and the crowd at Jekyll and Hyde drink beer and take in the rain.

This year’s theme celebrated heroes in the community which included some WWII and Vietnam veterans. They received a lot of smiles and acknowledgement as they walked down the pepper tree lined High Street. Those vets were only up staged by the helicopter flyover to kick off the parade and the palm waving princesses from Ventura County and Moorpark. Here are the details for you skeptics out there: www.moorparkcountrydays.com

Highlights of the parade were the various dance companies showing their latest hip hop moves. I think we must have about 4 dance companies in town but Pam Rossi’s Dance Ten is still the best in my opinion: http://dance-ten.com/

My personal favorite is watching the high school bands come through. Of course, Moorpark High School was well presented with its band and color guard. It was great to hear that Moorpark USD will be receiving a large federal grant to help save some jobs. (BTW, Great job by the board stepping outside of the classroom and getting some of that stimulus Obama money). Hueneme High School is a well respected band but nobody can say their name unless you are a member of the Colonia Chiques.

Local lawmakers included Mayor Janice Parvin and Former Moorpark Chamber President Dale Parvin, Moorpark Council Members Roseanne Mikos and Keith Millhouse were in good spirits. Of particular interest were David Pollock and Mark Van Dam, as it is re-election time for those gentlemen. Congressman and long time serving judicial oversight committee member, Honorable Elton Gallegly rode on his classic fire truck. He gave out fire hats to the kids as if it was TARP 2008 all over again.

Mark Bailey was the host of this year’s event and did a good job of heckling the parade entrants but his real talent is playing guitar with his band. His daughter Jennifer Bailey is a very talented vocalist in her junior year at CLU. She is offering vocal lessons at a good price, didn’t you hear her?

Vendors and food servers were going at it full steam including Carli’s Bistro (313 E.High Street 805-529-6675)—the line was out the door which was great to see. You should get the tri-tip they serve up over the weekend -right from the pit. Better value than Wood Ranch if you ask me.

All in all it was a fun day. We all were united for a few hours on Saturday which is nice to see, rain and shine in this case. Even the low riders were smiling as they were allowed to show off their cool “rides” without fear of raised eyebrows.

Until then see you on Tierra Rejada and LA Avenue with a stop on High street and the sight of Pepper Trees lined along the road.

Happy New Year to my fellow bloggers. What do you mean “Happy New Year “ You say?

Oy vey..fellow bloggers. We just celebrated the Jewish New Year and the holiest and most solemn day in Judaism, Yom Kippur. To my knowledge there is not a real Jewish temple in our City but I must share with you the great things that are being made available by a local Moorpark Chabad.

Rabbi Shimy and his family recently started a Chabad out of their home in MP. www.jewishmoorpark.com They recently hosted High Holiday services at a leased space in the Vons Shopping Center on Tierra Rejada. I must confess they are the nicest and welcoming orthodox Jews that I have met. (My wife has orthodox cousins in Zurich, Switzerland) Now I must tell you that I’m a born and raised Roman Catholic but I’m married to a Jewish girl, Tina. We have both been steadfast in our religious beliefs and respect each other’s upbringing and support each other by attending church and temple services regularly. Our situation does get more complicated with how we are raising our two children. We are introducing both or our kids to Catholicism and Judaism. At times it can be challenging wondering if we should kneel or wear a yamika but we get it figured out sooner or later!

The kids have embraced our approach and are learning a lot about faith, traditions and most of all, tolerance.

Rabbi Shimy and his respected members made my family feel special as we celebrated the service with them. Rabbi Shimy has a great sense of humor and extremely knowledgeable about torah and the teachings. I learned more in these past two days then in my prior 14 years of attending services with Tina. (I think she did too) I also had the honor of helping bring the torah to Rabbi Shimy during the service. In this Chabad, they are orthodox and this meant being separated from one other (men on left, woman on right) and this made for interesting dinner conversation as we broke the fast.

I encourage you to visit and get more information from Rabbi Shimy. If you are seeking to get connected with Jewish faith or get reconnected with your Jewish heritage. Once again, another great reason to discover Moorpark

Have a great year and did you hear the t’kai?

Good Evening to my Moorpark Bloggers. Just back from a weekend in Seattle, WA. Unlike the movie, “Sleepless in Seattle” I had no time to sleep! The family was busy with a fun weekend. You must take a trip when in the state of Washington to Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Park. We took a 30 minute helicopter ride which allowed us to see the crater from the mountain up close! Even after thirty years since the eruption there are still signs of destruction. (U.S. Government won’t allow for any further disturbance of the terrain since it is now a National Park) Be sure to check out the Johnston Ridge Visitor Center for an information packed movie and excellent factual account of the events leading up to the eruption of May 18, 1980. I would also suggest the helicopter ride. It’s a bit pricey but a once in a lifetime bucket list item. Get more details from the website: http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/mshnvm/

We toured the San Juan Islands and specifically Orcas Island. The highlight was the Constitution Monument with 360 degree view of many of the San Juan Islands and British Columbia. The weather was clear and cool and we got a good glimpse of Paul Allen’s hideaway with secret details that I cannot share… We took the ferry from Anacortes which takes about 40 minutes and makes it easy to get to where you want to go. Here is the website if you ever want to see the San Juan Islands yourself: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/Schedule/ScheduleDetail.aspx?departingterm=1&arrivingterm=10&roundtrip=true

The final day of our trip was spent in the city of Seattle. We stopped at the Space Needle and checked out the Observation Deck (unique but very expensive in my opinion) We were slightly disappointed with the Science Fiction Museum but the Music Experience next door was a definite highlight. History of all kinds of music and you can even record you own live song version and feel like one of the rock stars on stage. It is the “on stage experience” and it is absolutely free. I must admit I (Lou Valdez) was the laggard of our band: The Valdez 5. If you want a memory of the experience a DVD along with poster costs about $30.00—it was fun and gave you a feel of why rock starts tour! http://www.empsfm.org/

Of course we hit the Pike’s Public Market and saw the “fish hecklers” Ate some great food and sampled everything from olive oils to the sweetest nectarines and blackberry’s around! Our day closed out with a nice Mexican dinner in Wakahila, a surprise considering the Pacific Northwest doesn’t have many Hispanics around!

One note while I was out: I noticed the Foundation Gala got some publicity in the Moorpark Acorn. Our own Hugh Riley and Stuart Cooper were quoted in the article. I think the event that I described would be considered a success…yours truly was too busy working the silent auction and meeting people to get the press attention I guess.

Until then see you on Tierra Rejada and LA avenue with a stop on High street and the sight of Pepper Trees lined along the road.

I was honored to be involved in the inaugural Moorpark Foundation for the Arts. Of course, I had to be involved since I’m a board member! Our initial fundraiser was an opportunity to introduce our Foundation to the City and share what our mission is: to promote and bring awareness to the Moorpark High Street Arts Center. By the looks and feedback, it was well received. The event started at the HSAC with a highlighted performance from the children’s cast of INTO THE WOODS. This was the Summer Youth Program that was funded in part by the Foundation. It was followed by an excellent song by the upcoming lead in EVITA. I didn’t get her name but she will soon be well known! Her name will soon be in lights in October when EVITA opens for the first stage play in 2010 Season. Ken Rayzor, general manager of the theater highlighted the evening with an update on the stage plays for 2010-2011 and introduced a unique season ticket holder program:. Buy a season “pass” and based on availability, see the same show as many times as the holder wants! Go to www.highstreeartscenter.com for more details.

A gourmet dinner at the Secret Garden followed with 70 guests. www.thesecretgardenrestaurant.com

Michele, owner and chef, prepared a fine meal and the ambiance was perfect on a summer nite on High Street. You have to check it out and have Michele show you his patio! The event included recognition of the MP City Council http://ci.moorpark.ca.us/cgi-bin/htmlos.exe/07259.1.088181096800014641

Many council members attended and also the former general manager, LJ Stevens. She was honored for her years of dedication and service to the High Street Arts center by her mentor, David Ralphe.

The evening concluded with a fundraiser by silent auction. Many people walked away with some great items and enjoyed the wheeling and dealing, practically horse trading!. It was a good inaugural event to bring people to focus on attending some of the great events at HSAC, raise some money and have some fun!

Now off to Seattle for a family vacation over Labor Day so my next post will be either from Pikes Marketplace in downtown Seattle or Mt. St Helens volcano!!

Until then see you on Tierra Rejada and LA avenue with a stop on High street and the sight of Pepper Trees lined along the road.

Good Monday to all of you.

So it was a great weekend in Moorpark. The High Street Arts Center was filled with friends and family from Friday to Sunday with the 1st Annual Summer Youth Theater Camp. 25 kids from Moorpark and surrounding communities got a chance to do a youth production of “Into the Woods”. This show had it all: singing, dancing and some very talented kids showed no fear on that stage. Clearly a highlight was the “milky cow” Penny Stevens who at 5 years old is a pseudo twin of Shirley Temple. It was great to see some new kids get up on stage and perform for the community. I think they will be back for other shows!

Ghislaine Sopher-Phillips put on a great theater camp for the Moorpark Residents. She is the owner of TrebleMakers. She helps young children reach their potential in live theater with singing, dancing and voice lessons. Check out her website: www.treblemakers.net

Can you believe school starts next Wed. 8/25?? I can hear the moans and groans all over town from kids and cheers and yelps of joy from parents! Better get the last minute beach bus to Zuma! How about hitting Forever 21 or Justice for the young girls? Of course, when I went to school you never wanted to show up with new clothes or shoes on the first day of school for fear of getting pummeled by punks. I hope they don’t do that to my kids on the first day!

Boys are in full gear with football practice for Moorpark Packers and Moorpark Saints Football and fall brings AYSO and Club Soccer to the City. Girl’s softball is heating up and soon the traffic at Arroyo Vista will bring no parking again…

Until then see you on Tierra Rejada and LA avenue with a stop on High street and the sight of Pepper Trees lined along the road.

It’s great to be back after a week on vacation! My family and I traveled up to Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park. What a great place to get away from city life (even in Moorpark). We left all technology behind and my carpel tunnel seems to be diminishing after one less week of typing and texting!

I would encourage anyone to go to see the Giant Sequoia Tree forest and marvel at how beautiful things are and have been preserved for all of us to enjoy. These great living trees will be around for future generations because they do such a good job of preserving nature in the national parks. Sequoias generally don’t die due to old age, but just decide to fall one day (don’t want to be up there when that happens if you know what I mean) Sounds like a bottle of wine when air mixes –ouch.

So while I was on vacation, the Moorpark Foundation (one my current board affiliations) has been keeping busy promoting the High Street Arts Cultural Center. In fact, the Ventura County Star recognized the Youth Summer Camp at High Street with a nice article in today’s edition. This summer youth theater camp was sponsored in whole by the Moorpark Foundation. Here is the link to read about how theater and arts are being supported by the City of Moorpark: http://www.vcstar.com/news/2010/aug/17/young-thespians-cook-up-musical/

In fact, my kids, Anthony and Alexis made the article and are so excited to be performing this coming weekend at the Theater. Come check it out and see the youngest and brightest (bias writer here) that MP has to offer

I have to also let my readers know about our first annual fundraiser for the MP Foundation for the Arts. This event is going to be Saturday, August 28th at 6PM. Show to be performed by the Summer Theater Group along with a gourmet meal and wine at the Secret Garden on High Street: http://thesecretgardenrestaurant.com/

Tickets to this inaugural event are $75.00 and it will be a great venue and evening to celebrate with the movers and shakers and actors of Moorpark. Tell them Lou sent them and come seek me out! (Moorpark Foundation for the Arts Gala Invitation Flyer)

Until then see you on Tierra Rejada and LA avenue with a stop on High street and the sight of Pepper Trees lined along the road.
